How Traditionally Antiquated Municipalities are Streamlining Payments with Modern Technology

For decades, vehicle owners grew accustomed to fishing out a few quarters each time they had to pay for parking at their local neighborhoods, cities, and and other public places. Lost are those days, as more cities and localities start using technology and change over to smart parking meters and smartphone apps that enable drivers to pay for parking spaces without having to fish for cash or coins.

Homestead Partners With Smart Meter Parking Application

It is a familiar situation for many: either leave an event to go replenish the soon-to-be expired parking meter, or risk getting a ticket. Pittsburgh-based MeterFeeder, Inc. has developed a smart parking system to avoid these situations, and the service will soon be available in Homestead.

While having lunch with a friend, Jim Gibbs was struck by how many parking tickets she was carrying around. "She opened her bag and it looked like confetti, parking tickets were flying everywhere," he said. "Then she said, 'If you make an app that would allow me to pay for parking remotely, I would use it every day.'"

'Smart' parking arrives in Dormont

Parking in Dormont has gone high-tech. The borough has implemented a parking system developed by software company MeterFeeder Inc. that allows motorists to download an application to pay for parking by using their smartphones. The company provided training for Dormont parking enforcement personnel and installed signs that give information about downloading the app, according to police Chief Michael Bisignani.
